Lighting Standards

We are committed to playing a leadership role in Sustainable Lighting Design and advocate  development of lighting standards based on best practices philosophy. This practice relates lighting design to aesthetics and engineering, economics and planning, sustainability and ecology;

We emphasize the adoption of maximum illumination levels appropriate for the zoning in question, with particular attention to light trespass, sky-glow and veiling glare.

Lighting, Dark Sky and Urban Development

Intensified urban forms of development have resulted in the proliferation of lighting systems illuminating commercial centers, parking lots, roadway systems, gas stations, recreational facilities, etc. has lead to a diminution of undeveloped and natural environments and their dark-sky characteristic. Associated increases in lighting infrastructure costs and increases in energy use can have an adverse impact on sustainability of urban developments and visual effects of added sky-glow.

Please contact us to discuss how a lighting standard can assist you to maintain appropriate lighting levels, minimise system cost and reduce sky-glow.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a rating system that is recognized as the international mark of excellence for green building in over 132 countries.

IDA is actively engaged with government, volunteers and other organizations to raise awareness of the value of the night sky and to garner allies in our efforts to protect or heritage of a natural night sky.
